Moving Expenses

Yep, we’re moving. Heading back East after about six years living in the West. Time to get away from the Seattle rain, and soak up some of that Atlanta humidity and climate. And with the move comes a lot of goodbyes. Goodbyes to friends, habits we’ve acquired in Seattle like visiting Pike’s Market, Uwajimaya for kimchee and daikon, and walks around Greenlake. And goodbye to some of the things we’ve acquired while living in Seattle.
We got a few quotes from moving companies–Pod companies, U-haul trucks and U-haul hitches and trailers, car transport companies, and more. And what did I take away from all of this research? It’s going to cost a pretty penny to ship our stuff, that’s what!
And truth be told, we’ve come to the conclusion that what we own isn’t worth what it will cost to ship it all. $3,000+ to ship some books, a futon, a Queen-size bed, and some other little stuff? Um, no, I think we will have to pass. Personally, I didn’t think it would cost all that much to move, not if we were going to do it. But with high gas prices, and apparently high moving equipment rental costs, selling our furniture and certain unneccesaries is going to be the reality of what happens. In a way, that’s fine by me. I like getting new furniture. It makes me feel like I am moving forward–even though financially it’s never good to be spending on the same stuff every couple of years, at least when it comes to big purchases. I’d rather put that money towards a house. But I do enjoy the moving, I must admit. And so here comes another one…and hopefully, for my better half, a more permanent one.
